Can a website built with AI rank on Google? What we measured
Yes. Google says it judges the page, not how it was made: AI content "doesn't give content any special gains", and good, helpful pages can rank however they were written. What holds most small-business websites back isn't the AI, it's the basics: a slow page on phones, missing titles and descriptions, no sitemap, thin text, and no Google Business Profile. We measured those basics on 13 websites built with AI on Ginta, using Google's own PageSpeed tool. Below are the numbers, and what the website can't do for you.
Measured on 5 November 2026 with PageSpeed Insights (mobile, the better of two runs). Ginta is our product.
What Google says about AI-written pages
In February 2023 Google Search explained its position: it rewards high-quality content "however it is produced", and using AI mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies (Google Search's guidance about AI-generated content). For a small business that means: a website written with AI is fine, as long as it says true, specific things about your business (what you do, where, prices, hours) and isn't one of a hundred near-identical pages.
What we measured
Thirteen demo websites for made-up businesses (a bakery, a barber, a gym, a dental studio, a nail salon, a massage therapist, a hair salon, a piano teacher, a dog walker, a candle maker, a yoga studio, a driving instructor and a bike workshop), all built with AI, by Ginta's own AI or by Claude through Ginta's MCP server, and hosted on Ginta. Each was opened as a phone would see it.
| Lowest | Median | Highest | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 86 | 100 | 100 |
| Accessibility | 88 | 100 | 100 |
| Best practices | 100 | 100 | 100 |
| SEO (the 4 sites open to search engines) | 100 | 100 | 100 |
| Largest Contentful Paint | 0.8 s | 1.5 s | 4.2 s |
Nine of the thirteen belong to demo accounts that tell search engines not to index them (so they don't show up as real businesses); their only SEO finding was exactly that, "Page is blocked from indexing". The slowest page was the bakery, at 4.2 s for its largest element.
On every one of the 13 pages we also checked the source: a page title, a meta description, a canonical address, exactly one main heading, a sharing image, the language set, and a sitemap at /sitemap.xml. Nine of the thirteen also carry structured data that names the kind of business (Bakery, HairSalon, DrivingSchool and so on) with its address or opening hours, which is what Google reads for local results.
What the website does for ranking, and what it doesn't
What a good builder does for you:
- A fast page on phones, with images in modern formats and sized for the screen.
- A title and description for every page, in the website's language.
- A sitemap, a robots file, and a quick note to search engines when the site changes (Ginta pings IndexNow on each publish).
- Structured data for the business: name, address, hours.
- One address per page (a canonical), and the right language tags when the site has translations.
What no website can do for you:
- Your Google Business Profile. For "near me" searches, the map results come mostly from Business Profiles: verify yours, add your hours, photos and the website link. Our guide: how to get your business on Google.
- Reviews. Ask happy customers to review you on Google. Your website can show real reviews too (Ginta's Reviews part shows only the ones you add or approve).
- Links from elsewhere. Your social profiles, local directories, the chamber of commerce, suppliers and local news.
- Words people search for. Say plainly what you do and where: "emergency plumber in Leeds", not "solutions for your home". The AI writes better when you give it real details.
- Time. A new website usually takes weeks before it shows up for anything competitive.
Your own domain matters
A website on your own domain (yourbakery.com) builds up its own reputation, and you keep it if you move builders. Ginta's free websites live at name.ginta.page and can be found on Google; your own domain starts at €5 a month, and you can buy one inside Ginta for €29 a year.
Check your own website
Our free website checker runs the same basics on any website: speed on phones, title and description, headings, sharing image and more.
Questions
Does Google penalise AI-generated websites?
Not for being made with AI. Google's guidance rewards helpful, high-quality pages however they're produced, and treats AI used mainly to manipulate rankings as spam. Many near-identical, thin pages are the risk, not the tool.
Are AI website builders bad for SEO?
Not by themselves. The pages we measured scored 100 for SEO wherever they were open to search engines, with a median performance of 100 on phones. What matters more is what's on the page and your Google Business Profile.
How long until my new website shows up on Google?
Often days for a search of your business's name, and weeks or months for competitive searches. Adding the site to Google Search Console and your Business Profile speeds up the first step.
Do I need my own domain to rank?
No, but it helps over time: a domain of your own collects links and trust for you, and stays yours if you change builders.
