ChatGPT Sites: what it does, what it costs, and when a website builder fits better
ChatGPT Sites lets ChatGPT build, host and share a website or a small web app from a chat. It's for ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts and Business and Enterprise workspaces, new sites are private until you share them, and you can connect a domain you already own. It's a strong fit for dashboards, internal tools and apps that use your connected accounts. For a small business's public website, check what it doesn't do for you: domains, booking, a shop, and someone else keeping it up to date. Below: what OpenAI's own pages say, the costs, and when a website builder like Ginta fits better.
Everything about ChatGPT Sites comes from OpenAI's help centre and developer docs, checked on 5 November 2026 (links at the end). It's new, so details may change. Ginta is our product.
What ChatGPT Sites is
In OpenAI's words, Sites lets you "create, preview, publish, and share interactive websites and lightweight apps". You ask ChatGPT (on the web or in the desktop app) to build a website, or mention @Sites, review a private preview, ask for changes, then deploy it to get its address. OpenAI's examples are an interactive pitch, a business dashboard from a data export, a support app or a learning hub; Sites can also use visitors' own connected apps, and host an MCP server.
- Who can use it: ChatGPT Plus and Pro, and Business and Enterprise workspaces. Not the Free or Go plans. In Enterprise workspaces, public publishing is off until an admin turns it on.
- Private by default: "New Sites are private by default." You choose who can open it when you share it.
- The address: a default address on chatgpt.site; for personal accounts it uses a random identifier rather than your username.
- Building uses your Codex usage; running and hosting a site (traffic, storage) is counted separately.
- Data and payments: a site can keep records in a database (up to 10 GB per site). You can sell through a third-party payment provider, and you handle fulfilment, refunds, support and taxes.
Custom domains and costs
- Your own domain: "Sites does not register a domain for you. You must already own the domain and be able to change its DNS records." You add it in the site's settings and copy the DNS records it gives you to your domain company.
- Hosting is free until 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, OpenAI says it will turn on metering, and you pay only for use above your plan's monthly hosting allowance. Its developer docs list proposed rates, including a custom domain at 25 credits a month and a monthly base fee for a site with a database.
- Plan: you need ChatGPT Plus or higher to use Sites at all.
When ChatGPT Sites is the better choice
- Tools and dashboards for you or your team, especially ones that read your connected apps.
- Prototypes and one-off pages you want to share privately.
- You already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Pro and you're happy to keep every change in ChatGPT.
When a website builder fits a small business better
A business website has jobs a general-purpose site generator leaves to you:
| ChatGPT Sites | Ginta | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | Anyone, in Ginta's own chat; also from ChatGPT (developer mode) and Claude |
| Free plan that publishes | No | Yes: 20 websites at name.ginta.page, with a small badge |
| Public by default | No, private until shared | Yes |
| Your own domain | Bring one you own and set its DNS | Bring one, or buy one in Ginta for €29 a year, set up for you; from €5 a month |
| Booking, shop, menu, events | Build it yourself | Ready-made parts, card payments into your own Stripe, Ginta takes no fee |
| Contact form messages | Build it yourself (database) | In your Ginta inbox and your email |
| Someone else keeps it up to date | Through ChatGPT | yoursite.com/admin for a helper, no Ginta account needed |
| Hosting price after 2026 | Metered above the plan's allowance | Fixed monthly price; Free stays free |
If you want both, you can: connect Ginta to ChatGPT in developer mode and ask ChatGPT to build the website with Ginta (how). ChatGPT does the AI work on your ChatGPT plan, and Ginta hosts the site with its parts, forms and domain.

Questions
Is ChatGPT Sites free?
Not on ChatGPT's free plan: Sites is for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Hosting is free until 31 December 2026; from 1 January 2027 OpenAI plans to charge for use above your plan's monthly allowance.
Can I use my own domain with ChatGPT Sites?
Yes, if you already own it: you add the DNS records Sites gives you at your domain company. Sites doesn't sell domains.
Are ChatGPT Sites public?
Not at first. New sites are private by default, and you choose who can visit when you share. In Enterprise workspaces an admin has to allow public publishing.
Can ChatGPT Sites take bookings or payments?
It can build them, but you build and run them: OpenAI says payments go through a third-party provider and you handle fulfilment, refunds, support and taxes. Ginta's booking and shop parts are ready-made and take card payments through your own Stripe account.
Can I build a website with ChatGPT for free?
With ChatGPT Sites, no. You can ask free ChatGPT for the code and host it yourself, or describe your business in Ginta's own chat, which is free to start and puts the website online.
