Ginta vs Etsy
Ginta vs Etsy: should I sell on Etsy or on my own website?
Etsy is a marketplace: your listings sit next to other makers' and buyers find them through Etsy's search and ads. Ginta is your own shop on your own website, with no commission on sales. Etsy costs nothing a month but takes a share of every order; Ginta's shop is free to start and Stripe's card fee is the only cost per sale. They do different jobs, and many sellers keep both: Etsy to be found, their own shop for repeat buyers and the people who follow them.

When to pick Etsy
- You want buyers who are already searching. Etsy also advertises your listings on other sites with Offsite Ads, and you pay only on orders that come from an ad. Ginta brings no marketplace buyers: people come from your own links, Google and social media.
- No monthly bill while you test. A listing costs $0.20 and lasts 4 months, and there's no plan to pay for.
- Digital downloads. Etsy sells files you made or designed, such as printables and patterns. Ginta's Shop sells physical products and pickup only.
- PayPal, Klarna and Etsy gift cards. Etsy Payments takes all of them; Ginta takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay through Stripe.
- Markets and fairs. Etsy works with Square for in-person sales in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, keeping your stock in step. Ginta has no point of sale.
When to pick Ginta
- Keep more of each sale. Ginta takes 0% on every plan. Buyers pay on Stripe's checkout into your own Stripe account, and Stripe charges its card fee. No listing fees, no ads fee.
- A shop that's only yours. Your products sit on your own website with your story, photos and contact details, not next to other sellers. Your own domain starts at €5 a month (with your own Claude or ChatGPT) or €19 on Light.
- Pickup and local delivery. Pickup with time slots buyers pick, delivery by country or zone, by weight or order total, free from an amount. Good for a pottery, a bakery or anyone selling to their own town.
- More kinds of discount. Buy X get Y, automatic discounts, volume prices, sets at their own price, your own gift cards and cart add-ons, on every plan, Free too.
- Bring your Etsy listings. Ginta imports Etsy's CSV export, matches the columns and shows a preview first.
What Etsy really costs a small shop
Say you're a seller in Lithuania with 20 orders of €30 a month (item and shipping, €600), one item per order, listed in euros and paid out to a euro bank account:
- Listing fees: 20 sales × $0.20 = $4 (renewing each sold item, or the next item of a listing with more than one).
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of €600 = €39.
- Payment processing: 4% of €600 + 20 × €0.30 = €24 + €6 = €30.
- Total: about €69 + $4 a month, roughly 12% of sales, before ads.
- If 5 of the 20 orders came through an Offsite Ad: 15% of €150 = €22.50 more.
Not counted: the one-time shop set-up fee, Etsy's 2.5% currency conversion (when your listing and bank currencies differ) and the regulatory operating fee in countries such as the UK (0.48%) and France (1.14%). On Ginta's free plan the same orders pay Ginta nothing; Stripe charges its card fee on each one.
Etsy and your own shop: doing both
You don't have to choose. Keep Etsy for people who find you there, and give your regulars, your Instagram followers and local buyers your own shop. Etsy itself rewards sending people to your Etsy shop with your own links: its Share & Save programme gives back 4% of orders that come through them. Etsy's own website product, Pattern, costs $15 USD a month after a 30-day trial and has no transaction fee; Ginta's own-website shop starts free.
To start your own shop, export your Etsy listings as a CSV and import them into Ginta, then connect Stripe. The two shops keep their own stock, so update both when something sells, or keep one-of-a-kind pieces in one place.

How much does Etsy take from a sale?
6.5% of the order total including shipping, plus payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + €0.30 in most of the eurozone, 4% + £0.20 in the UK), plus $0.20 to renew the listing. Orders that come from an Offsite Ad cost 15% more (12% for shops over $10,000 a year), at most $100 per order.
Is Etsy free to sell on?
There's no monthly fee, but it isn't free: each listing costs $0.20 USD, there's a one-time shop set-up fee, and Etsy takes fees on every sale. Ginta's free plan has no listing or sales fees; Stripe charges its card fee.
Are Etsy's Offsite Ads optional?
Only until your shop makes $10,000 USD in a 365-day period. Below that you can opt out; once you cross it, Offsite Ads are required for the lifetime of your shop, at 12% of each order from an ad.
Should I have my own website as well as Etsy?
If people already come to you through Instagram, markets or word of mouth, an own shop lets them buy without Etsy's fees, and Etsy stays for people who search there. Ginta's free plan holds 25 products per website, so you can try it next to Etsy at no cost.
Can I move my Etsy listings to Ginta?
Yes. Download your listings CSV from Etsy and import it in Ginta's Shop: columns are matched and you see a preview first. Then connect Stripe so buyers can pay by card.
